About Stave Island Gallery
Gouldsboro, ME
Stave Island Gallery, named for the island that sits just off the coast from us in
Frenchman's Bay, is located in a cottage right next to our 1880s farmhouse. In addition
to my pottery and weaving, the gallery will feature the work of other Maine artists and
artisans. Outside, you'll find pink granite ledges, ever-increasing flower gardens, and
a pond full of singing frogs. Hummingbirds dart through the bee balm and perch on the
willows as woodpeckers drum in the woods. An ancient lilac hedge and tangles of beach
roses line the driveway, and a curtain of evergreens shields us from the road. My studio
is in an old woodshed at the end of the kitchen ell of our house, just a few feet from the
gallery. Most days, I open up the barn doors and look out over the flowers and the cedar
woods while I throw.

Heading east from Ellsworth on Route 1, turn right on Route 186 at the big brown sign for
the Schoodic section of Acadia National Park. (Route 186 makes a loop around the Schoodic
Peninsula; you want the first turn onto Route 186.) The gallery is approximately 3 miles
from the turn. About ½ mile after the turn, the road will be joined by another fork from
Route 1 in front of Maine Kiln Works and the Sunset House Bed & Breakfast. Continue on Route
186, bearing slightly right as you pass Maine Kiln Works. After you pass the sign for the
Bluff House Inn on your right, continue for another 4/10ths of a mile. Look for my sign on
the left at the foot of the hill, just across from Moose Wood Lane. We are the second left
after the Bluff House sign. Be sure to slow down—it's a sharp turn into our driveway.
The house and gallery are only a few yards from the road, but you won’t see them until you've
turned into the drive. If you pass the Old Post Office Restaurant, turn around—you've gone too
far.
If you're coming from Winter Harbor or other points down the Schoodic Peninsula,
take Route 186 toward Ellsworth. In the village of South Gouldsboro, you'll pass
by the Old Post Office Restaurant on your left. Continue for another few hundred feet.
On your right, just after a small green-shingled house, you'll see our sign and driveway.

A gallery garden
The gallery will be open from June through October, Tuesday through Saturday from 9-5,
and at other times by chance or appointment. We hope you'll come visit this summer!
