Schoodic Peninsula Links and Highlights

The Schoodic Peninsula is a beautiful place to visit. It's less crowded than Bar Harbor, and the Schoodic section of Acadia National Park offers incredible views of Mount Desert Island and Cadillac Mountain, as well as hiking trails, picnic areas, and rocky beaches and tidepools for exploring. Louise Dickinson Rich, author of "We Took to the Woods", summered in Corea and wrote a wonderful book about the area, titled, appropriately enough, Peninsula. It's a great introduction to the history, landscape, and people of the peninsula, and a loving portrait of Downeast life.

In South Gouldsboro (our village), you can rent a kayak or explore Stave Island with a guide at Mooselook Guide Service. My husband, Jeremy, is a licensed massage therapist and proprietor of Knotwork Therapeutic Massage. Call ahead to schedule an appointment and combine your visit to the gallery with a relaxing, restorative massage. If you're staying overnight, the Bluff House Inn, just up the road, has beautiful views of Frenchman's Bay. Fortify yourself at the Old Post Office Restaurant, stop by Shore Road Variety for picnic fare, or make a trip back to West Gouldsboro to Mandala Farm for organic veggies, eggs, and milk fresh off the farm.

Winter Harbor is home to a number of galleries, craft and antique shops, and more great food. The Winter Harbor 5&10 has everything you might have left home without, and then some. Try Gerrish's for coffee and ice cream, Chase's for the best, no-frills, real Maine seafood, or Mama's Boy and the Fisherman's Inn for fine dining.

Continuing around the peninsula, you'll come to the Schoodic section of the park. It's a one-way loop of about ten or twelve miles of gorgeous shoreline. You'll come out in Birch Harbor, and you can take a right and continue on around the peninsula toward Prospect Harbor (home of the Beach Cliff sardine cannery, one of the last of its kind). You'll find US Bells, the Down East Deli, and many other great stops as you continue back toward Route 1. Soon before you join up with Route 1, drop by Darthia Farm for local organic produce and preserves.

The Schoodic Peninsula is home to Schoodic Arts for All, which hosts a two-week arts festival in August, and offers workshops, concerts, and theater throughout the spring, summer, and fall.

While you're visiting the gallery, be sure to pick up the Schoodic Peninsula Chamber of Commerce brochure, an excellent resource for planning your trip around our peninsula. From afar, visit the following websites to learn more (each link will open in a new browser window; just close the window to return here when done):
